BACKGROUND FOR EYE SURGERY
Your eyes reveal more than any other feature of your face. When your eyelids are clean and not puffy, you appear younger and well rested. If your eyelids are heavy, puffy, wrinkled, or pigmented, you appear older, fatigued, and not well rested.
Blepharoplasty (Blepharo = eyelid in Greek) may be the choice for you. There is a range of possibilities that offer the chance to rejuvenate and freshen your eyelids.
Eyelid surgery is done for men and women, from their early twenties on. Popular corrections include:
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Removal of excess fat, especially toward the nose. Removal of excess skin.
Lower EyeLid Surgery
Laser treatment of fine lines. Removal of fat bags.Tightening of the lower lid so it is more horizontal.
ANALYSIS BEFORE EYELID SURGERY
Any analysis of the eyelids must include a history. You must advise us of any thyroid disease, dry eyes, autoimmune disease, detached retina, diabetes, high blood pressure, or severe allergies. Also advise us of any medicines you take, and if you are under the care of an ophthalmologist.
The analysis will focus on the anatomy of your eyelids, the eyebrow level, crow's feet, skin pigment, and facial tone. Photographs will be taken.
PLAN
A detailed operative plan will be reviewed with you. Our goal is to make your eyelids look younger, rested, smoother, beautiful, and natural. Try to stop smoking and avoid any homeopathic medicines before surgery.
EYELID SURGICAL PROCEDURE
The procedure is usually done in our clinic under intravenous sedation and lasts 1/2 hour. Skin and fat will be trimmed from the upper lids, leaving a natural hidden crease. On lower lids, thin incisions will be made under the eyelashes or from behind the lid (transconjunctival), depending upon skin tone. Laser and chemical peels are frequently done to smooth the skin for drooping lower eyelids. The lid margins can be elevated.
EYELID SURGERY AFTERCARE
Recovery is usually three to four days. Applying ice for two days helps reduces swelling and bruising. We place a protective ointment in the eyes, so they might be blurry for a few hours. Discomfort is minimal. (if there is any severe pain, please telephone us; it signifies some bleeding). Make up is allowed after five days. Small sutures are removed in three to four days. Exercise is allowed in six days. Fine swelling and puffiness usually resolves within seven to ten days.
