Lip Augmentation and Reconstruction

Full lips are associated with youth and beauty. As your body’s natural collagen begins to wear out with age, wrinkles and creases appear. With time, the muscle and soft tissue that give your lips their fullness will gradually diminish, making your lips look thin and less distinct. Recent studies show the progressive loss of lip volume in women starts at 20 years of age and greatly diminishes each decade after.

Lip augmentation creates fuller, plumper, and more symmetrical lips while reducing vertical lines around the mouth. Lips may be injected with injectable fillers, such as Restylane or Juvederm, or with a "fat graft," fat transferred from another site in your body. These procedures instantly enhance your appearance, with little to no down time.

One injection is usually sufficient to produce the desired result. Depending on the material used, injections will last at least 6 months and up to 2 years. As a highly trained plastic and cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Lesesne uses his skill, judgement, and a discerning eye to properly distribute the injected material, which is critical to achieving a natural look.

Dr. Lesesne will evaluate the position of the lips in relation to the chin, nose, and eyelids, as well as the relationship between the upper and lower lips, then discuss the pros and cons of each treatment option with you.

If there is relatively small soft tissue deficiency, then an injectable such as Restylane, Juvaderm, or fat graft works well. Dr. Lesesne injects the dermal filler into the lips until they reach a desired size and shape. This can be layered to correct fine lines, and give the mouth more substance. It will not turn the lip up creating a “duck” look.

For patients who have had lip injections that failed, or want a more prominent lip, then a lip advancement works well. In a lip advancement procedure, the lip is advanced from either the nose (advancing skin into the nose) or by excising skin immediately above the white rolls of the upper lip, removing skin parallel to the lip border. The configuration of the lip can be changed if desired. This technique is also effective for patients who suffered trauma and require lip reconstruction.

Most lip augmentation procedures are performed under a regional block, similar to that used by a dentist so there is little down time. Minor bruising and swelling can occur, but subsides in 1-3 days.
