Rhinoplasty: Nose Surgery

A Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a nose job or nose surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that improves the appearance of the nose. Rhinoplasty procedures can also be used in reconstructive surgery cases to repair the nose after injury or accident. In some cases, a rhinoplasty is performed to facilitate better breathing.

The desired goal of rhinoplasty is a nose that looks natural and blends harmoniously with your facial features. The new results can have a positive effect on the way you feel about yourself.

The majority of men or women who decide to undergo rhinoplasty surgery do so in order to reshape their naturally large or wide nose shapes. Other reasons for rhinoplasty nose surgery include:

     • Nose appears too large for your face

     • Bump on the nasal bridge when viewed in profile

     • Nose seems too wide when viewed from the front

     • The nasal tip droops or plunges

     • The tip is thickened or enlarge

     • Nostrils are excessively flared or wide

     • Nose is off-center or crooked

Many patients undergo reconstructive nose surgery due to injury or trauma. If you have been injured in an accident and it has misshaped your nose, Dr. Lesesne can perform rhinoplasty surgery to restore your nose as close to its original shape as possible. If you experience breathing problems or have constructed nasal passages, rhinoplasty or septoplasty surgery is an excellent reconstructive solution to repair the nose and increases the ease of breathing.

Analysis, Procedure, and Recovery

Analysis

It is important to discuss previous trauma, nosebleeds, allergies, and breathing abnormalities with Dr. Lesesne during your consultation. The nose is examined internally for any obstructions or potential problems. The nose is then viewed in relationship to the rest of the face to determine the aesthetic outcome. Dr. Lesesne will make treatment recommendations based on your anatomy and desired results. We recommend using our Vectra 3D imaging system during rhinoplasty consultations to simulate an accurate surgical result.

Procedure

Cosmetic or reconstructive nose surgery can consist of a tiplasty, septoplasty, or full rhinoplasty surgery. Dr. Lesesne will create a surgical plan consisting of multiple surgical maneuvers to create the desired effect. Each anatomical part of the nose including turbinates, septum, bone, cartilage and skin is corrected to improve nose function and aesthetics.

Tip-plasty is a procedure performed to correct the nasal tip to reduce fullness and refine the width to bring the nose into proportion with the rest of the features of the face.

Septoplasty is a medical necessary reconstructive surgical procedure to correct a deviated nasal septum, which is the displacement of the bone and cartilage that divides your two nostrils. During septoplasty, your nasal septum is straightened and repositioned in the middle of your nose.

Technique

In general, a rhinoplasty, tiplasty or septoplasty nose procedure is corrected by either a closed or open surgical technique. Dr. Lesesne uses a closed technique when major reshaping or resizing of the nose is required. The closed technique is also good to remove nasal obstructions. Incisions are made on the inside of the nostrils, leaving little if any visible scarring.

The open surgical technique allows Dr. Lesesne to shape the nasal bone and cartilage very precisely. A small incision is made to the small strip of skin between the nostrils known as the columella. This can leave a small, yet unnoticeable scar underneath the nose.

Recovery

After your surgery, your nose will be put in a cast (splint) to hold its new shape. The splint (if one is used) can be removed 6 days after your surgery. Dr. Lesesne will prescribed medications to reduce pain and swelling. Recovery depends upon the extent of the procedure. You can resume normal activities one week after surgery. Subtle tip definitions can take up to 1 year to occur. Internal swelling can take 2-4 weeks to resolve although incisions are closed.
