Facial Plastic Surgery, Facelift

As we get older, the tissues in the face and neck loosen. These changes occur as a result of genetics, gravity and environmental exposures. Jowls form over the jaw line and excess skin, fat and vertical bands may appear in the neck. These issues will continue to progress unless they are corrected.
A face lift is an elegant cosmetic surgery designed to eliminate sagging skin and reestablish a more youthful appearance. The main areas treated by a facelift are the neck, cheeks, and jawline.

We have modified the facelift surgery to make it safer, with shorter scars, and with a rapid recovery. Facelift incisions can be limited in length, with an incision in front of the ear. This is more commonly known as the short scar technique. These procedures primarily address the jawline. A neck lift alone can also be performed, primarily addressing the neck with an incision behind the ear. Over time, these incisions become well camouflaged in the hairline and natural creases. Depending on the extent of tissue laxity, the type of facelift used may vary, and other procedures may be considered.

Once healed, patients typically receive comments that they look younger, refreshed, rested, or they may even entertain questions regarding the loss of weight. Patients also report an increased sense of well-being and self-confidence.  Our results exemplify our philosophy of a natural rejuvenation where everybody notices, but nobody knows.

Our facelift plastic surgery approach consists of four precise steps: analysis, plan, procedure, and aftercare.

Facelift Analysis and Surgical Plan

The Analysis

The analysis phase before a facelift is designed to collect accurate data about your desires, your concerns, as well as the anatomic changes of your face. Your past medical history, previous procedures, and current medications will also be reviewed.

A critical component of the analysis is the physical examination of your face. Unlike many other surgeons, we look at your face in total. We are interested in all planes of the face including bone, muscle, fascia (fibrous), lipous (fatty), and skin. We note the differences in aging from area to area. For example: cheeks versus eyelids versus neck. We carefully look at wrinkle length, depth, and visibility.

Measurements may also be recorded to check for asymmetry of the skin, muscle, or bone.  Photographs before facelift surgery are a crucial part of the examination process. We are seriously interested in how your face ages, and we realize that we are seeing you at only one point in time. Therefore, we prefer to analyze previous photographs as well as current photographs. The more analytical information we have, the better.

The Surgical Plan

After the analysis, we will consult with you to develop a suitable treatment plan. This plan will review your goals, treatment options, potential side effects, timing of the procedure, recovery, and location of treatment.

In reviewing your goals, we will focus on specific requests and anatomic changes desired; for example, what look you would like to achieve? What look you want to avoid? We want to fully understand your wishes and come to a mutually agreed upon plan. We want you to be pleased with the results of your facelift surgery.

The Procedure

After the treatment plan and timing have been agreed upon, the treatment phase begins. Skin treatments and liposuction are done quickly and simply in our minor treatment rooms. These procedures are minor and do not require IV anesthesia.

Facelift surgery takes approximately 1.5-2.5 hours, and will require MAC anesthesia. Facelift surgeries are performed in our completely equipped operating suite with a fully monitored recovery room staffed by registered nurses. Minor skin treatments are administered by specially trained and experienced aestheticians or plastic surgery nurses. Dr. Cap Lesesne personally performs all other procedures.

The Recovery

Prior to your surgery our office will provide you with a written set of post-surgical instructions. We will review these instructions with you, and your caregiver, the day before your scheduled surgery. Based off your medical history and physical, Dr. Lesesne will prescribe medications for pain, swelling, antibiotics to prevent infection. You will see Dr. Lesesne 1-2 days after surgery for your first follow up visit.

Recovery from a facelift involves the application of a bandage surrounding the incisions to reduce swelling and bruising, which must be worn for 48 hours. A thin tube may be inserted after surgery to drain any excess fluids. The drain is not painful and can be removed 1-2 days after surgery. Typically, stitches are removed after one week, with bruising and swelling subsiding after 5-7 days. Some numbness in the face is normal, and may last as much as a few weeks.

A facelift can not only improve your self-confidence, but change the way you feel about aging and yourself. Facelift surgery poses minimal risks and can last for years with the proper care. Following your facelift surgery, our staff will provide a customized program of surgical and non-surgical procedures to help to make the results of your facelift last longer.
