Liposuction, more commonly referred to as lipo, is a procedure in which fat is removed from targeted areas, contouring and slimming the shape of your body. Liposuction can be used to remove fat in many areas of the body including the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, arm pit area, inner knees, chest, back, and arms. It can also be performed in conjunction with other reshaping procedures, such as tummy tuck or facelift to further enhance results.
Removing fat via suction, or cannula, is the only way to contour irregularities and remove unwanted fat from the body. To determine the best liposuction technique for each individual patient, the amount of excess fat is measured in relationship to the skin. Dr. Lesesne also addresses the skin tone, stretch marks, and the level of fat during the consultation. The goal is to sculpt the body and contour the skin, with minimal lumps and scars. In order to provide the best results to his patients, Dr. Lesesne offers several types of liposuction in his New York City office.
Liposuction Procedures and Techniques
High Definition Liposuction is a Smartlipo technique that helps to uncover and sculpt muscle definition.Smart Liposuction, also known as laser liposuction, uses a laser at the tip of the cannula to help remove the fatty tissue. The fat is burned, causing it to liquidify, and is then suctioned out. This form of liposuction has become one of the fastest growing body contouring procedures in the United States. With Smartlipo, Dr. Lesesne is able to remove unwanted fat with less swelling, bruising, and discomfort compared to typical liposuction. Dr. Lesesne uses Smartlipo Triplex for liposuction procedures in his New York City surgical suite. Smartlipo Triplex uses three different laser wavelengths to target and remove unwanted fat. This type of laser liposuction technology helps to stimulate the collagen and elastin which tightens and shrinks the skin. Studies show Smartlipo Triplex is able to shrink the skin an average of 54% more than standard liposuction alone.
Power liposuction uses the same method as traditional liposuction however, a motor powered cannula is used with a gentle suction to remove fat. The fat cells are then removed with gentle suction. Power liposuction’s specialized cannula emits rapid, tiny vibrations to loosen fat cells for easier removal. Since the fat deposits are broken up more efficiently with the vibrating power, a smaller cannula can be used resulting in less swelling and less noticeable incisions. Dr. Lesesne is able to remove a greater amount of fat cells in a shorter period of time, making power liposuction a great method for large surface areas such as the abdomen and hips. Bruising and swelling is greatly reduced with power liposuction, which results in a fast recovery.
Suction Assisted Liposuction (SAL) is the most traditional liposuction procedure. SAL Liposuction is used with a small tube cannula and causes the least trauma and smallest scar. This procedure uses a 1.5 to 2mm tube remove the fat. The incisions are less than 1cm and placed in well hidden locations. All areas are pretreated with a tumescent solution containing Saline, Novocaine, Adrenaline and a long acting anesthetic - Bupivicaine. For areas with fibrous tissue, such as breast, back, pubic areas, a small amount of a collagen enzyme is used to facilitate fat removal.
Liposuction surgery is done in our Park Avenue surgical suite in Manhattan. In most body contouring procedures, IV or MAC anesthesia is required. Local anesthesia can be used for patients undergoing liposuction on small surface areas such as the neck and arms.
Depending on the area(s) treated, typical liposuction recovery takes anywhere from 3-5 days, however, most of our patients are up and running the day after their surgery. Bruising and swelling may occur, but will subside after 7-14 days depending on your treatment. After your procedure, small holes are left to drain during the first 24 hours. This is rarely painful and carries a low risk for infection.
It is important for patients to wear compression garments after their liposuction surgery. The garments are worn up to four weeks post-surgery to aid in healing. After the initial swelling is gone, patients may choose to wear a light compression garment or shapewear for a few additional weeks. Most people can return to normal activities in 10 to 14 days.
With all liposuction procedures, weight fluctuations afterwards can compromise the result. Minor skin irregularities can occur despite all precautions. Revisions to remove more fat can occur and are done under local anesthesia and take less than 30 minutes. Provided you have not gained weight, Dr. Lesesne does not charge a surgeons fee for liposuction revision, however, a small facility fee may apply.
